“A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more. ‘Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded.’ declares the LORD. ‘They will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your future,’ declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 31:15-17 Recently my world has been rocked by two Daniels*. If we could sit by the fire on a chilly Mexican evening, I would tell you the long version of their stories. For now, I’ll just tell enough to peak your interest and hopefully your burden to pray for each of them. Their stories are Advent stories—Jesus bursting onto the scene of their dark, turbulent existence and puncturing it with Himself. Daniel #1 In November, I had the “airmiles gift” of visiting Kenia in Cape…Continue Reading
Home Longings by Joan Godard - Heaven Is My Home Art by Calvin Hanson
In recent travels, we had some flight difficulties and after spending a couple of days in airports, I leaned into Trever and sighed, “I just want to get home.” When cross-cultural workers are asked, “Where is home?” usually we give a complex, indirect answer or answer with more questions of our own. Is home where we were born and raised? Our passport country? Where our extended family lives? Where we presently live and work? Some future destination or all of the above? Listen to Psalm 84’s (MSG) “home” declaration: “What a beautiful home, God-of-the-Angel-Armies! I’ve always longed to live in a place like this, Always dreamed of a room in your house, where I could sing for joy to God-alive!.. And how blessed all those in whom you live, whose lives become roads you travel…. One day spent in your house, this beautiful place of worship, beats thousands spent on…Continue Reading
Last week, in a crowded restaurant, Laura* leaned close to me and said, “Your face radiates the love of God your Father! I want that too. I want the love of God and I want him to be my Father.” She has never known God that way, but her heart told her this was real, true love. Laura’s deep desire for it led her to a prayer of repentance and an tearful plea for God to become her Father. God’s family is his expression of true love and belonging. Because He loves us, “His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave him great pleasure”(Eph. 1:5). God’s family is his expression of true love and belonging. He delights in making himself known through his family of adopted children. We are a part of his story,…

Godards Matthew Training Center
“I have decided to follow Jesus.” As a child, I remember singing that with all the passion my little heart held. One of the verses says: “Though none go with me, still I will follow…” While that should be the commitment of every Jesus follower, it sort of leaves out the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20, “Go and make disciples of all nations…” Simply defined, making disciples is:  I follow Jesus and you follow me as we both follow Jesus together. My husband, Trever and I were married on December 29, 1980 on the west coast of Canada. That was long before the elaborate “theme weddings” of today were trendy. In the presence of loving family and friends, we ate our wedding feast under a banner that read, “Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus.” We covenanted Hebrews 12: 1-3 as our life theme. For the first few years of marriage, God…Continue Reading
